Technical Deep Dive: Implementing x402 Payments

The HTTP 402 Payment Required status code has existed since the dawn of the web, but it was rarely used—until the age of AI agents. Traditional credit cards don’t work for sub-cent microtransactions or autonomous machine-to-machine logic.

The x402 protocol (pioneered by Coinbase and utilized by AgentBureau) finally makes this status code functional.

How x402 Works

When an agent calls a protected API (like sending a physical fax), the server responds with a 402 status and a PAYMENT-LINK header.

The Request/Response Cycle

  1. Agent Request: POST /v1/faxes
  2. Server Response: 402 Payment Required
    • Header: PAYMENT-LINK: web3+base:0xContractAddress/transfer?amount=1.5&currency=USDC
  3. Agent Action: The agent parses the URI, signs a transaction on the Base network, and submits it.
  4. Verification: The agent retries the original request with the transaction hash in the X-TX-HASH header.
